E-Cops - Calling the police over Christmas
sent via Corporate Communications
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY TO THE ECOPS E-MAIL ADDRESS BY USING YOUR REPLY BUTTON.
ANY E-MAILS SENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL OFFICER ADDRESS MAY RESULT IN THE E-MAIL
REMAINING UNREAD FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
Hello,
We have had the odd query about the policing service over the Christmas
period and which numbers people should call to get a police response.
The policing service will be exactly the same over Christmas as with any
other time of the year. In an emergency (where there is a threat to life or
property) 999 should always be called.
Where there is a less urgent call, or you need to report a crime which
isn't happening right at that moment, or you need to speak to an officer on
a non-emergency basis, please call 0345 456 456 4 and your call will be
answered by the police service centre.
As part of our promise to you in the national policing pledge, the force
control room operators aim to answer 999 calls within 10 seconds. In the
past year this happened with 96 per cent of calls.
If you need to call 999, you should be given an estimation of how long it
will take an officer to get to you. For the highest priority emergencies,
in urban areas, officers aim to get to you within 15 minutes, and in rural
areas, 20 minutes.
This year has also seen the introduction of an 'appointments system'
meaning if you need to speak to an officer about a crime, or we need to
speak to you to take statements, an officer will visit you at a time and
place which is convenient to you.
We're very proud to say there are hundreds of appointments available seven
days a week from the morning through to late evening.
Please keep a look out for our e-cops notices about police surgeries for
the coming year and come along when you can.
Merry Christmas,
Your neighbourhood team.

E-Cops - Thefts from Cash Machines
sent via Corporate Communications
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY TO THE ECOPS E-MAIL ADDRESS BY USING YOUR REPLY BUTTON.
ANY E-MAILS SENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL OFFICER ADDRESS MAY RESULT IN THE E-MAIL
REMAINING UNREAD FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
Dear Subscriber,
We want to make you aware that there have been a number of incidents at
cash machines in Cambridge during the last few weeks where users
withdrawing cash have been distracted and had their money stolen. To date,
8 offences have taken place at various locations in the city.
Male and female offenders have been operating in two and threes and have
been described as speaking with Eastern European accents. They have then
approached the victim from either side and once the victim has pushed their
card into the machine and entered their pin number, the offenders distract
the victim by waving a newspaper in front of the screen asking for money to
buy food. Whilst distracting the victim, another offender then enters a
cash withdrawal amount of at least a £200, they then leave after taking the
money and the victim doesn't realise until they find their card has been
returned. Amounts taken have included £200 and £300. In two cases users
have realised what was happening and were able to grab the money before it
was taken. The most recent incident occurred on Saturday 19th December
where a 25-year-old man had £200 stolen from him in St. Andrews Street.
A number of lines of enquiry are being followed up. People who commit these
types of offences tend to move around so please be on your guard and pass
this information on to your family, friends and contacts to be alert. In
that way we can prevent further thefts and enjoy the festive season.
If you see any suspicious behaviour around cash machines please report it
straight away by ringing 999. If you have any information about these
offences please contact DC Evans at Parkside Police Station on 0345 456 456
4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Many thanks,
Your Neighbourhood Policing Team.

E-Cops - Distraction burglary warning
sent via Corporate Communications
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY TO THE ECOPS E-MAIL ADDRESS BY USING YOUR REPLY BUTTON.
ANY E-MAILS SENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL OFFICER ADDRESS MAY RESULT IN THE E-MAIL
REMAINING UNREAD FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
Hello all
This week we have received a report of two men acting suspiciously in the
Papworth area.
They were driving a van and wearing fluorescent jackets. We would like to
take this opportunity to remind residents how to avoid becoming the victim
of a distraction burglary.
LOCK - Is your back door locked? If not, lock it before you answer the
front door as distraction burglars often work in pairs - one distracts,
while the other steals.
STOP - Are you expecting anybody?
CHAIN - Put this on before you open the door. If you have not got one, it
is a worthwhile investment. It will give you that extra 'safe space' and
barrier between you and the caller and then,
CHECK - Ask for their identification card, take it and look at it
carefully. Close the door and check the number in the phone book - not the
number on the card. If they are genuine they will not mind waiting or
coming back another day.
Kind Regards,
Melbourn NPT Team.

E-Cops - 'Drink driver gets busted by CCTV'
sent via Corporate Communications
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY TO THE ECOPS E-MAIL ADDRESS BY USING YOUR REPLY BUTTON.
ANY E-MAILS SENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL OFFICER ADDRESS MAY RESULT IN THE E-MAIL
REMAINING UNREAD FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
Dear all,
In an effort to show how police officers and CCTV operators work well
together, we have released some rather timely footage to the media and on
You-Tube which might be of interest to you.
On this particular occasion, an eagle-eyed camera operator spotted the man
on the attached link, ranting and raving at his car in the early hours of
the morning. He then decided to relieve himself on it, before getting
behind the wheel.
Realising he was clearly drunk, the CCTV operator called police and
fortunately as he came around the corner, he was spotted and was pulled
over by a police car. This not only shows how good communications can
potentially prevent a serious accident, but is timely to our drink drive
campaign which runs every year at this time.
This man was just over double the drink drive limit. He was banned from
driving for 20 months, fined £190, given a referral order and ordered to
pay £100 courts' costs.
I imagine that some people will find his ranting funny, and I can see why,
but by watching this in full, it might make some think twice about drunk
drivers and appreciate why officers go to such efforts to stop and
breathalise people. Thankfully for other road users - and the man involved
- this had a relatively happy ending, with no injuries or deaths.

E-Cops - Christmas burglary campaign launches today!
sent via Corporate Communications
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY TO THE ECOPS E-MAIL ADDRESS BY USING YOUR REPLY BUTTON.
ANY E-MAILS SENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL OFFICER ADDRESS MAY RESULT IN THE E-MAIL
REMAINING UNREAD FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
Dear All,
This week the Christmas burglary campaign kicks off and runs until the end
of January. Among the many lovely traditions of Christmas, an unfortunate
one is often a rise in burglaries.
There are a number of things officers are doing about this as part of the
campaign. One of them is sending a force Christmas card, hand delivered by
a member of the burglary squad, to any burglary suspect. These 'suspects'
are where we have intelligence on them to suggest they're involved in some
way, but not necessarily enough to arrest them...yet.
The card says: "Just to remind you that if you offend this Christmas, you
may well miss out on all the festivities. Cambridgeshire police would like
to warn you to keep out of trouble. The Burglary Squad are working over the
Christmas period. Have a Merry Christmas! From your Burglary Squad Team."
Officers will also be carrying out warrants looking for stolen goods and
where we know of a burglary 'hot spot' area, we will be carrying out
additional patrols.
As always, if you spot something suspicious, please call police on either
0345 456 456 4 or if you spot a crime in progress, always call 999.
To play your part in the campaign, please remember to:
1. Close the curtains once it gets dark outside, especially if the lights
are on inside.
2. Keep doors and windows shut and locked.
3. Hide from view any tempting gift-wrapped presents.
4. Remove presents from vehicles as soon as you can.
5. Look out for any elderly or vulnerable neighbours and encourage them to
follow these tips.
6. Not leave empty boxes outside on view as these could advertise the
Christmas goodies inside the house.
7. Register your gifts for free on the Immobilise database. Immobilise is a
free property registration system which allows stolen or lost goods to be
identified and returned to the owner. Property can be registered at
www.immobilise.com.
Thank you,
Your neighbourhood team.

Dear all
You may remember being told about the FREE service www.immobilise.com
It is a very useful resource for us so make sure you get onto immobilise
and register free online any valuables that have a unique serial number,
such as mobile phones, i-pods, laptops, bicycles and cameras at
www.immobilise.com. This can ensure that as soon as your item is found we
can trace it back to yourself and will improve your chances of getting your
property back if it is lost or stolen. It can also create a paper trail for
thieves selling property on the internet.
For mobile phones you will need your handsets IMEI number. This can be
found on the box the phone came in, on your contract, or on a label usually
located behind the battery. Keep a note of this number as the police will
need this if you have to report your phone stolen.
To register MP3/4 Player you will need the serial number.
- With Christmas up and coming and with a rise in thefts over the Christmas
period it's an excellent opportunity to register your property now!
Now I'm sure you've heard it all before, but please take the following
precautions:
1. Be aware of your surroundings, and conceal items where possible.
2. Never leave property unattended, keep it on you, not near you, or on
show in vehicles.
3. Be particularly vigilant when travelling home from work, college, and
when leaving railway stations or other public transport places.
Stay safe and get on www.immobilise.com!
Kind regards
Melbourn Neighbourhood Policing Team.
