Winter Cycling

The dark evenings are on us once again and it's easy to get caught out without lights after dark. Hopefully this video will be a "light" hearted reminder of the need to be visible on a bike in the village after dark - Enjoy

Justice Minister visits Bassingbourn

Clare Ward visited Bassingbourn last week to see the Bobby Scheme combined with the Community Cashback funding scheme which redirects the proceeds of crime back into the community, in action. The Bobby Scheme is run by the Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust which is a registered charity formed in 1999 to improve community safety in the county.

The Bobby Scheme provides a free service to victims of burglary aged 65 or more who live in the county. It also helps many older people who are not yet victims but who are at high risk or feel vulnerable.

E-Cops - FIREWORKS ADVICE

Dear all,

We will be working to ensure that people keep to the law regarding the use of fireworks.

Our position is:

  • Police will not tolerate the misuse of fireworks.

  • Police also have the power to stop and search anyone they think may be in unlawful possession of fireworks.
  • Anyone caught using fireworks anti-socially could face an £80 fine.

Remember:

  • It is an offence for anyone under 18 to buy fireworks, or to sell fireworks to them.
  • It is an offence for anyone under 18 to be in possession of a firework in a public place.
  • It is an offence to throw a firework in, or into, a street or public place.
  • Retailers have to be licensed to sell fireworks.
  • There are curfews as to when fireworks may be used. This is normally between 11pm and 7am, although this is extended on November 5.

Kind regards

E-Cops - Alert - Spate of distraction burglaries

Dear member,

In the past few days we have had eight distraction burglaries reported to us from the Cambridge city and South Cambs areas. Some of them may be linked and we have teams of officers investigating them.

However, there is something that every resident can do to help.

Please look out for your vulnerable or elderly relatives or neighbors. These offenders generally target people who are old, or have a disability of some kind as often they are seen as more vulnerable and essentially, easy to con.

They try to enter homes under false pretenses to take cash, or anything of value before making a quick exit. As you can imagine, it often leaves the victims confused and upset. In the most recent offences, the men doing this have said they are either police officers (which they weren't) or from the 'Water board' which is not only fictitious but also a lie.

Sometimes simple measures have prevented these thieves from entering the
victim's home. Just a chain on the door helps, and if the resident makes a big deal of checking ID, the offender can become worried, or impatient and just leave.

If you notice anything suspicious in your street, always report it.

And if you have vulnerable neighbours, please look out for them. It can't hurt checking that they know what to do when someone strange is at their door, or reminding them about putting on their chain.

The most recent ones have taken place in Bliss Way, Cambridge; Gilbert
Close, Cambridge; Coolidge Gardens, Cottenham; Mowbray Road, Cambridge;
Magna Close, Great Abington; Chalmers Road, Cambridge; Radegund Road,
Cambridge and Orchard Close, Girton.

Thanks again,

Your neighbourhood team.

E-Cops - Force releases film

Dear Member,

As we have previously mentioned we are currently running a campaign to let you know what we've been doing to meet the national Policing Pledge.

This week we are focusing on point three of the Pledge, our promise of visible policing. To coincide with this the force is releasing a short film which shows the diversity of the modern policing role; 'Real people, making a real difference'.

Some of you may recognise a few faces in the film as neighborhood teams were involved in filming. Those officers you do not recognise still play a vital role in protecting our streets and we all work closely to police the county.

The film, which is just under four minutes long, can be viewed via our website. It demonstrates the roles of the wider policing family and features appearances by the dog unit, force helicopter, custody, neighbourhood policing teams and firearms team.

Following the web launch the film will also be used at recruitment campaigns, panel meetings, community events, school presentations and public areas such as shopping centres.

The film sound track 'This is it now' was written and performed by Peterborough band 'The Brays'. The force approached The Brays because they wanted to use a local band and felt the song lyrics fitted the film perfectly.

We hope you enjoy the film.

Kind regards

E-Cops - NOT IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEK 2-6th NOVEMBER 2009

Dear all

Not in my neighborhood week is going to be running from 2-9th November 2009. The week of action gives local police forces and partners involved in community safety the opportunity to showcase the work they do to keep neighborhoods safe. The objectives of this week are to:

  • Let people know more about what we are doing to keep the community safe
  • Tackling crime and anti-social behavior
  • Meeting and talking to residents and encourage them to contact police about any issues or concerns they have

I will be emailing you next week with activities that we are planning to take place during this week. In the meantime, please feel free to contact us with any thoughts you may have about this and suggestions that would be relevant to your area which may already have ongoing problems.

Kind regards

MELBOURN NPT TEAM.

E-Cops - HALLOWEEN ADVICE

Please find below regarding key Halloween advice:

• Those not wanting to take part in the Halloween festivities can display a 'no trick or treaters' poster. These are available the Force website – http://www.cambs.police.uk/crimeprevention/advice/advice.asp?ID=160

• Ideally children trick or treating should be accompanied by an adult.

• Children should stay in groups, make sure at least one person has a mobile phone on them and not go out too late.

• Children should tell someone where they are going, what route they will be taking and what time to expect them back.

• Not everyone wants to get involved in Hallowe'en and children are reminding to leave residents not wanting to take part in peace.

• Police patrols across the county will be increased to prevent any anti-social behavior and to ensure the safety of those involved in the

Halloween festivities.

Kind regards

E-Cops - Cold calling concerns

Since Monday 19 October there have been a number of incidents reported to the police involving cold calling to sell home security alarm systems. Householders have been concerned about the terms used in phone calls, making them worry about the security of their home.

Some reports involve household visits and the use of high pressure sales techniques such as:

Offering a system for free or discounted once a call has been made to a manager.

Pressure to sign up straight away, in order to get a good deal.

Remaining in the person's home for 2-3 hours to achieve a sale.

Recent reports have come from Abington, Balsham, Girton, Cambridge, and Litlington near Royston.

When buying an alarm system it is always advisable to get at least 3 quotes, and look for companies that are accredited by N.S.I. (National Security Inspectorate) or S.S.I.A.B. (Security Systems & Alarm Inspection Board) Independent Inspectorates are not-for profit approval bodies who carry out inspection services for the security industry in order to protect customer interests. They are governed by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) the sole accreditation service recognised by the government.

If you have been contacted and feel concerned please contact the Police or Cambridgeshire Trading Standards for assistance.
