Dear e-coppers,

This is your monthly CID update, focusing on burglary and vehicle crime for January. Some good news is that we had 58 fewer burglary victims last month for southern division (Cambridge city, East Cambs and South Cambs), compared to last year. We will keep working on this. I realise most of the update is relevant to Cambridge city this month - another month may differ.

- We have arrested four young men in connection with a robbery on Saturday, January 16, at the One-Stop shop in Willingham where cash was stolen. Two of them were remanded to court and released on bail with conditions and tags. One has now been remanded in custody and the other was further arrested for an offence of shoplifting. Our work on this case continues.

- A 32-year-old Cambridge city burglar we charged with two burglaries in the city appeared in court for his sentence and he admitted a further 28 burglaries and vehicle thefts. It's great that we have been able to tell his victims that their offender is caught. He was given three years and got "significant credit" by the Judge for "cleaning his slate". A couple of his victims have now written to us, pleased their crime has been solved.

- We have arrested and charged a young man with two burglaries in Waterbeach and the Coleridge area of the city. We caught him after fitting a camera in the home of one of his previous victims. He went back to burgle again and that gave us the evidence we needed. He was caught within 36 hours. We also managed to match his DNA to that from another burglary.

- A raid took place at a woman's home in Selwyn Road, Cambridge and stolen property was found which came from a burglary in Hills Road in Cambridge in December. The woman implicated a man who we arrested and found him with keys from the burglary which were used to steal the owner's vehicle. He was on licence from prison and was swiftly recalled. The woman was cautioned for handling stolen goods and results of further forensic tests are awaited.

- We have stopped a pattern of offences being committed in Tesco's car-park in Cheddars Lane, Newmarket Road, Cambridge. Our offender waited for lone women to put their shopping in their car and return the trolley. He then stole the handbag from the vehicle. Our suspect was arrested, however actual evidence is very thin on the ground, but we are working on that. He is now under the watchful eye of our 'prolific and priority offender' team to prevent his offending and work with him to turn his life around. So far we have seen no further offences and he is still engaging well with officers.

- We raided a house in Ellison Close, Cambridge and recovered a laptop hidden. Two men were arrested and interviewed as we suspected the property had come from a burglary hours earlier. One man is currently on police bail and the other has just been sentenced for driving offences.

- A drugs warrant took place in Newmarket Road, Cambridge which led to a man being arrested for stealing a vehicle from the city. The log book was found at the address. Neighbourhood officers, reactive offices and CID all worked closely on this. He is currently on police bail for this offence and will be dealt with in the near future.

- An officer doing house to house enquiries identified a wanted burglar. As officers went to arrest him, he was in the process of committing a burglary in the Queen Edith's area. He was caught red-handed with the jewellery still in his pocket. He then admitted six further burglaries, two of which his was charged with and four will be taken into consideration when sentenced by the judge at court. Since his arrest, the series within the Queens Ediths area has all but stopped.

- A wanted man had been running from police for several days after we matched his DNA to a burglary. An officer spotted him and made the arrest. Our investigators quickly engaged with him and he's now admitted a further burglary, two non-dwelling burglaries and three thefts from vehicles. He has been remanded into custody and we have just heard he's told the judge he wants to admit more offences so his sentencing has been put back. Excellent news for those victims who will see their crimes cleared up.

- The city neighbourhood policing team and reactive officers quickly responded to a burglary in progress in Darwin Drive, Cambridge and gave chase resulting in two arrests and charges.

- A man was arrested after his DNA and footwear marks were found at the scene of a burglary. He is now on police bail with strict conditions while enquiries continue and so far he has been compliant (we check up on key people to ensure they behave as they are supposed to).

- We arrested, interviewed and charged a man for a burglary in French's Road, Cambridge.

We will aim to give you another update next month. Remember, if you have any information about a crime, please report it to us on 0345 456 456 4. If a crime is in progress always call 999.

Kind regards,

Detective Inspector Andy Gipp
Parkside CID

Dear Members,

We just wanted to let you know about some new content on the Cambridgeshire

E-Cops - School parking and hare coursing

Hello e-coppers,

Just to remind you that anyone with new or current information in relation
to hare coursing could be valuable to our rural crime action team.

The sort of information they are interested in is vehicles which are being
swapped round and the registrations of these vehicles. Of if you see hare
coursing taking place, please report it as soon as possible.

The rural crime action team officers use a number of tactics to tackle the
problem, including intelligence gathering, high visibility patrols and
using the force helicopter.

On another note, in recent weeks we have had a large increase in reports of
anti social parking during school hours. This could be due to the bad
weather and parents wanting to drop their children off and pick them up as
close to the school as possible.

Could I firstly remind everyone to park in a manner which is unlikely to
cause inconvenience to others and to look out for single yellow lines and
double yellow lines. These offences can result in a penalty ticket. I am
sure that the majority park correctly when collecting their children from
school so if you would like to make the neighbourhood team aware of any bad
cases of parking at your local school then please respond to this ecops
message.

Anyone with information regarding hare coursing should contact the Rural
Crime Action Team on 0345 456 456 4 or email rcat@cambs.pnn.police.uk.

Dear Residents

You will all have noticed an increase in problems with pot holes since the
severe weather hit us in December. Whilst we encourage you to report pot
holes to us if you think there is a real danger to road users, if it is
something that simply needs to be flagged up for the County Council to
repair, then there is an online reporting form, or you can call the council
directly. This is the message from our partners at Cambridgeshire County
Council;

Cambridgeshire County Council - Contact details to report Pot holes.

Recent freezing weather conditions have led to an increase in potholes
across the county and teams of maintenance staff have been sent out to
deal with them.

Many potholes have now been fixed, or we are already aware of them and they
are on our schedule to be repaired.

However, the County Council need your help to find the location of
potholes in your area that we may not know about.
Please report Highways defects as follows and we will do our best to
resolve them.

You can report on-line by using the following link:

New Sexual Assault Referral Centre

The Cambridgeshire Constabulary has recently opened the county’s first Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in partnership with the NHS and Rape Crisis. The centre, which will offer support and medical facilities for victims of rape and sexual assault, was formally opened by MP Barbara Follett.

It is based at The Oasis, at Rivergate, Peterborough, and is available 24/7 to victims by calling 0845 089 6262. Ensuring rape and sexual assault victims get the best possible service and all of the support they need is an issue close to the Cambridgeshire Police Force’s heart.

The Force set up the partnership project as part of its commitment to ensure victims of rape and sexual assaults get the best service possible and have all the support facilities possible to assist them. Those who use the facilities are under no obligation to report their incident to police but any forensic samples taken at the Centre will be kept on record in case the victims change their minds or can be used anonymously by police officers as intelligence on potential serial offenders. Victims will also be given the opportunity to report their offence to a specially trained officer (STO).

If you would like more information about the centre visit the force website on www.cambs.police.uk or on www.oasiscentre.org.

Health advice and tips for coping with wintry weather

  • Consider keeping curtains drawn and doors closed to block out draughts.

  • Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day to maintain body energy levels.

  • For more effective insulation against the cold, wear several light layers of warm clothing (rather than one single thick layer).

  • Keep active every hour or so to improve warm blood flow to legs and arms.

  • Wrap up with extra warm clothing to go outside - even if only briefly into the garden.

  • Try and keep your home at the recommended temperature of 18 to 21 deg C (65 to 70 deg F). There are Govt benefit payments available whenever the mean air temperatures fall to low levels for prolonged periods.

  • If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom for at least an hour or so before going to bed.

Vulnerable Neighbours

The recent tragedy of the elderly couple in Northampton who died of hypothermia at Christmas and remained unnoticed for some 5 days is a sad and sobering reminder of how vulnerable neighbours can be so easily neglected.

It is a salutary reminder that Neighbourhood Watch members, indeed all of us, can act as a vital lifeline to assist with the welfare of some of our elderly and vulnerable residents during these severe cold weather conditions.

We need to be vigilant and aware of any of our neighbours who cannot readily get out and about. A friendly knock at the door to chat and, if considered necessary, offer assistance could help to reassure some who maybe you would not normally consider to be vulnerable. NHW advice is that we need to check up on neighbours, especially elderly and disabled people, and particularly those with serious illnesses, recognising that they will be more vulnerable to cold weather if only from their inability to keep mobile and warm around their home.

If you have elderly or disabled friends, relatives or neighbours, do please spear a moment regularly to see that they are OK. Below are some simple tips to discuss with your neighbour to help keep them safe : -

E-Cops - Melbourn police station Update

Dear all

Plans have been agreed by South Cambs District Council for a purpose-built
police site to be constructed at Melbourn Village College.

The new site will consist of an office area for staff to work from and a
meeting and interview room.

The land upon which the old police station was situated has been sold and
the police station closed last week.

We hope the new police base will be very convenient for residents, being
adjacent to other village services. By being in the heart of the community
we hope people will find it easier to speak to us about issues.

It will also mean we are in close contact with our partner services for the
area.

We will be holding regular police surgeries and drop-in sessions at times
when people are likely to be using the other services in the area as well.

There will be a short period of time where the village will not have a
police station while the new one is being built, but we will be making use
of the mobile police station as a working base in Melbourn and other
villages and we will ensure there is no drop in service – so please feel
free to pop in and see us.

During this time and once the new base is operating, we will continue to
target our patrols.

If you need to speak to a member of the team, or want to report and
incident, call 0345 456 456 4. If you want to pass on information though,
feel free to reply to us at our team address.

Dear member,

In the past few weeks there has been an increase in vehicle crime. We are
doing everything we can to clamp down on this, by increasing patrols in
targeted areas, and sending out advice to local residents.

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, try not to leave property in your
vehicle when leaving it unattended, and if possible, leave the glove box
empty and open to show that you have not hidden any valuables inside.

Never leave a car running unattended to de-ice and also try to avoid
parking your car in isolated areas.

Also, a quick reminder for those interested in shaping the priorities set
by your neighbourhood policing team or finding out what the team have been
up to in your area over the past few months. The Melbourn / Bassingbourn
neighbourhood panel meeting will be held next week at Basssingbourn Village
College on Tuesday 19th from 7.15 p.m onwards.
